Question 4: How do you know that Satan is real?

Answer: Again, the simple answer is that we believe Satan is real because the Bible says he is real.  Additionally, all one has to do is look around at the depravity of this world and it is obvious that an evil force is alive and well, wreaking havoc at every turn.  Ephesians 6:10-20 tells us to “put on the whole armour God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil”.  We are told that our enemy is not flesh and blood but one that is in the spiritual realm – “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”  The Bible portrays Satan in many powerful and menacing forms: as a hungry lion seeking to devour (I Peter 5:8), as an “angel of light” – disguising himself and deceiving many (II Corinthians 11:13-14), as a liar and murderer (John 8:44), as a thief (Matthew 13:19), among many other wicked descriptions.  However, as the old song A Mighty Fortress is our God puts it…

And tho this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us,

We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph thru us.

The prince of darkness grim, We tremble not for him

His rage we can endure, For lo! His doom is sure: One little word shall fell him.

Yes, Satan’s doom is sure – for in Revelation 20:10 we see his future: “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”  While he may reign today as the “prince of the power of the air,” some day he will be silenced and put away forever.
